Among the many tools in a landscape contractor’s arsenal is green landscaping. Like other types of landscaping, green landscaping seeks to beautify a space through the use of plants and other natural materials. Green landscaping goes a step further and taps into ways to conserve water and reduce the use of pesticides while making a property as beautiful as possible.
Among the plants used by many landscape contractors are vegetable plants. Not only do these plants produce brilliant, vibrant colors during their growing and harvesting seasons, but owners like having organic vegetables on hand. Certain species, when planted next to each other, act as natural insect repellents. Native plants are also frequently used because of their ability to resist insects, weather, and changes in soil quality or water quantity.
Landscapers can use several different methods to help conserve water while still providing the necessary requirements for the landscape. Gray water is a resource that is not used much, but it can greatly reduce the amount of wastewater. Rain collection is becoming increasingly popular and can help conserver water. Drip systems are also being used more frequently because they put the water directly at the base of the specific plant rather than spraying everything else as well.

Composting uses natural biodegradable products like vegetable and lawn trimmings to produce soil fertilizer, while vermicomposting uses earthworms that feed on biodegradable material and produce concentrated natural liquid fertilizer. Both regular composting and vermicomposting add natural fertilizers and microorganisms to the soil that help keep plants healthy and ward off insects.
Rock and stone features known as hardscapes can be used by landscape contractors to create pleasing designs like patios and retaining walls. Various types of rock, paving stones, and bricks are used for hardscapes. Often, low water foliage is used with hardscapes to add appeal. Ponds are also used as part of an eco-friendly landscape. These frequently have fish in them and act as a small ecosystem, helping to reduce the bug population. With so many available options, landscape contractors are able to effectively produce green landscaping for nearly any land.
